Andrew and Lisa were visiting Melbourne from NSW and thought they’d enjoy a private Yarra Valley tour, just for the two of them, for a spot of wine tasting, a little look around the shops in Healesville, some lunch, that kind of thing.  We put together an itinerary for them which had Andrew fearful he’d be asleep under a tree after lunch, so we scaled the number of tastings back a bit – that’s the beauty of doing your own personalised tour.

Jeff picked them up in Melbourne, just managing to miss the AFL grand final parade / road closures, and drove them out to Dame Nellie Melba’s Coombe Estate where they enjoyed a great wine tasting with Kelly, (so much so they bought some wine to be shipped home) and appreciated the history of Melba’s home and memorabilia around them.

And from a grand and historic cellar door they then visited a gorgeous modern boutique winery, Maddens Rise on the renowned Maddens Lane, hailed as some of the Yarra Valley’s finest terroir.  We love to show visitors the diversity of our cellar doors here in the valley.

A leisurely wine tasting at Tokar Estate followed, where the couple chose a glass of wine to enjoy with their 2-course lunch and they thoroughly enjoyed their meal.

After lunch we agreed a walk through Healesville might be in order, and while Lisa popped into shops such as Chez Monde, Kitchen & Butcher and Crumbz Craft, Healesville’s fabulous haberdashery, Andrew and Jeff sat outside on the ‘husbands waiting for wives’ bench, and put the world to rights.  After a few essential purchases, Jeff drove Andrew and Lisa up to Maroondah reservoir so they could see the impressive gardens and dam wall.  Being a marine engineer Andrew was interested in the construction and enormity of the project and it is impressive given it’s in its 100th year.

As the afternoon was turning out to be sunny and fine, Jeff thought he’d take the pair to TarraWarra Estate for a tasting and it was such a beautiful afternoon, that rather than rush back to Melbourne, they decided to enjoy a glass of wine out on the pepper tree deck overlooking the dam and the vines and just relax and enjoy the glorious setting.

It was a really enjoyable day out for all and Andrew and Lisa will be able to remember their personalised tour in the Yarra Valley for months to come, each time they crack open one of the bottles they bought from the cellar doors right here in our famous cool climate wine region.
