We’re finding more and more that people want to visit the Yarra Valley and see more than just wineries – so when John picked up Helen and her Aunt Sally he’d put together a varied day for them taking in a little bit of everything.
They were staying at Secret Cottage in Healesville; Helen was on a six-month working holiday from Oxfordshire in England and her aunt is from the Sunshine Coast and came down to Melbourne to spend some time with her.
First stop was the Badger Creek Blueberry Farm and Winery and they loved the fortified wines, which are always popular as they are so unusual, and they bought wine and some of their amazing jams as gifts. Next we fitted in a visit to the Healesville Glass Blowing Studio where they watched with interest as a lesson was in progress – if you haven’t seen glass being blown, it’s well worth a visit, it’s so precarious and of course they make it look so easy!
A visit to the Yarra Valley Dairy followed where they enjoyed the local cheeses made there on the premises and had a coffee and bought all sorts of jams and other goodies from the great merchandise they have on sale there. We then fitted in a visit to Coombe – Dame Nellie Melba’s Estate to to look at the amazing buildings and memorabilia before Tokar Estate for lunch and another wine tasting.
After lunch we visited The Big Bouquet – the Alpaca and Gerbera Farm – where they enjoyed the impromptu tour of the beautiful gerberas and were amazed at the hundreds of flowers and their brilliant colours. We finished off the day at the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and enjoyed watching the chocolates being made by the Belgian chocolatiers and of course tasting the different chocolates.
