The first reason is simple - when you're sampling wine, cider, beer and gin in the Yarra Valley, you don't want to be driving!
And that's exactly what Alex and 7 of her close friends agreed on when they decided to have a couple of nights up in the Yarra Valley. They had all been to a wedding at Stones of the Yarra Valley last year and wanted to explore a little more.
You also get to put together entirely your own itinerary. Alex knew where they wanted to go and had booked themselves in for lunch at a winery, they just wanted a driver and van. So Joan was more than happy to oblige and collected them at 12.15pm from their accommodation, at The Old Mechanics in Church Street, Healesville where they really loved having all four great apartments near one another so they could easily pop in to one another's for drinks and chats.
Having a driver meant that they didn't have to plot a route or try and follow their gps to find anywhere - they trusted all that to a local - very sensible. Their first stop was Chandon for a sparkling tasting and then they took their favourite glass of sparkling outside to savour as they relaxed. They were very impressed with the “Chandon S” - Chandon Sparkling with hand crafted Orange Bitters, best served over ice with orange rind. They bought some Sparkling to take home and as they were planning on having some that night, Joan nipped off while they were having lunch and purchased them some ice and oranges for later - our drivers go over and above!
There's also something properly relaxing about not having to be in charge. When you've hired a driver - you don't have to keep an eye on the time - your driver does that, so you really can all kick back and thoroughly enjoy being out together as friends. Joan drove them up off to Rochford Winery where they enjoyed a couple of hours over lunch, relaxing and chatting and finishing off their wine outside in the sun.
After lunch it was time to pop up the road to Dominique Portet where they decided to finish off their fabulous afternoon with a couple of bottles of Fontaine Rose outside.
Joan dropped them back to their accommodation around 5pm and they were planning to head out later to Innocent Bystander for a late meal and were hoping to fit in a gin tasting
the following day before heading home.
It was a great fun afternoon with lots of catching up and laughs and the bonus was they got to have all the fun with none of the responsibility, and spent some quality relaxing time with their group of friends drinking some beautiful Yarra Valley wines.
They enjoyed it so much they have decided to make it a yearly date in the Valley so we hope to host them again - maybe next time with a full day so they can experience even more of our wonderful region!!
