When you've flown all the way from Canada to do a cruise of a life-time around Australia and New Zealand and you have limited shore leave in Melbourne, treat yourself to a private day's touring with us out in the Yarra Valley so you get the most out of your shore leave.
Six friends from Canada, Barb & Paul, Sharon & Kevin, Alison and girlfriend, arrived at Station Pier on the ill-fated Norwegian Star cruise ship from Sydney. They had flown from Canada to join the ship for a cruise to Melbourne, Tasmania and New Zealand but due to engine trouble they were already running a day late and were going to have to miss Tasmania. We were more than happy to work with them to reschedule their tour with us and ensure they loved their experience of the Yarra Valley after such a disappointing turn of events.
John collected the group from Port Melbourne and headed straight to Coombe Melba Estate where he knew they would love the history of the property, surrounded by so much Dame Nellie Melba memorabilia and they thoroughly enjoyed their wine tasting with the legendary Gordon at the cellar door, whom they had heard others raving about just the previous night on their tour to the penguins!
After Coombe, John took the group to St Hubert's winery, one of the oldest wineries in the Yarra Valley, where they enjoyed another wine tasting. As it was just down the road, they made a quick stop in at the iconic Yarra Valley Dairy, as it is a lovely working dairy with 100 year old heritage buildings now full to overflowing with boutique locally grown artisan produce and wines.
By this point in the tour everyone had worked up quite an appetite so sandwiches, cake and coffee were the order of the day in a lovely little Yarra Glen cafe. Which of course placed us nicely for a visit to the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie for some oh-so-necessary chocolate indulgence and time for a final wine tasting at Yering Station, in its lofty cellar door/art gallery space.
We hope their tour of the valley was a highlight of their trip, which had been dogged with disappointment from the moment Barb's Mum suffered a broken hip back home in Canada and had to pull out of the trip. Little did the poor group know that their ship was to have yet more engine problems, resulting in them flying home early.
It was a pleasure taking them out on tour and we hope they will make the trip out again to Australia one day, where we'd love to spend more time with them showing them more of our beautiful region, its gourmet food, beautiful gardens, indigenous animals at Healesville Sanctuary or a ride on Puffing Billy and help lay to rest their unfortunate experience first time round.
